Magnetic Conjugates for Cancer Detection

The image shows a dextran coated superparamagnetic iron oxide to which bombesin like peptides, peptides that bind to the gastrin releasing peptide (GRP) receptor, have been attached. This novel peptide iron oxide conjugate will serve as an MR contrast agent to image the distribution of the GRP receptor, which is an important molecular marker of the carcinogenic process.

The probe is of particular importance in imaging cancer within the prostate gland where the high spatial resolution of MR is necessary.
